Senator Alloway Vows to Fight for Scotland School
HARRISBURG –
Senator Richard Alloway II (R-33) today announced that he would fight to restore
funding to the Scotland School for Veterans' Children.
A message on the school's
website today announced that the governor would eliminate the $10.5 million
appropriation to Scotland School as part of his annual budget address on
Wednesday, resulting in the school's closing on June 30 after more than a
century of operation in Franklin County.
"I am deeply saddened that the
governor has targeted the Scotland School for elimination despite the vital
services this institution provides to so many children and relatives of members
of our Armed Services," Alloway said. "Through the years, the school has
provided thousands of children with greater opportunities for both personal and
professional success, and we must make every effort to ensure that the Scotland
School can continue to offer a quality learning environment for years to come."
Since the school was founded in
1895, more than 10,000 students have matriculated from the Scotland School for
Veterans' Children. There are currently 288 students attending the school in
grades 3 through 12, and 31 students are expected to graduate this year.
Senator Alloway said he will
draft a memo to Senator Lisa Baker (R-20), Chair of the Senate Veterans Affairs
and Emergency Preparedness Committee, to request a committee hearing at the
school this spring to examine the effects of closing the school, including the
impact on the community, the employees and the approximately 257 students who
had expected to return to the school in the fall.
