Professors Have a Long-Lasting Impact on Students

by state Senator Richard Alloway II

A teacher's success can often be measured by the accomplishments of his or her students. The tremendous accomplishments of so many SSHE graduates serve as a testament to the quality of the faculty at these institutions.

As a Shippensburg graduate, I benefited from the wisdom and experience of a number of professors not only in the Department of Government, but also in other areas of study. It was during my time at Shippensburg that former Department of Government Chair Dr. Hugh E. Jones first piqued my interest in government and politics. Dr. Jones had a passion for encouraging independent thought and promoting innovative problem-solving to address complex political and legislative issues, and this dedication was infectious to his students. He helped set me on the course to eventually be elected to the Pennsylvania Senate, and I am grateful that I've been given an opportunity to apply many of the lessons I learned in his classroom to my service in the General Assembly in Harrisburg.

In addition to a knowledgeable faculty, strong family ties are another thing that sets Shippensburg and SSHE schools apart from other universities. My own family is an excellent example; my sister is also a Shippensburg graduate, and my younger brother is currently enrolled there as a freshman. Our story is far from uncommon, and this family atmosphere is due in no small part to the groundwork laid by the faculty.

The tradition, opportunity and family atmosphere at our SSHE schools are a reflection of an active, attentive faculty that pushes students to reach their fullest potential. It has been an honor to represent Shippensburg in the General Assembly, and I am overjoyed that the university will remain in my district following legislative reapportionment. I look forward to serving as a strong voice for the university in the General Assembly for years to come.
