Alloway Supports Legislation to Eliminate Obamacare's Individual MandateHARRISBURG – Senator Rich Alloway II (R-33) voted for legislation today that would prohibit the federal government from requiring Pennsylvania residents to purchase health insurance. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act approved by Congress in 2010 would require every individual to purchase health care coverage. Senate Bill 10 would amend the Pennsylvania Constitution to remove this requirement. "The individual mandate is one of the most controversial aspects of Obamacare because it grossly oversteps the authority of the federal government," Alloway said. "This bill would give the people of Pennsylvania an opportunity to make their own decisions on health care instead of letting the federal government further infringe on their personal freedoms." Because the measure would require an amendment to the state Constitution, the bill must be approved during two consecutive legislative sessions and be approved by the voters in a statewide referendum. Senate Bill 10 was approved by the Senate today and will now be sent to the House of Representatives for consideration. | |
